Watch Multiplex create the largest timber roof in the Southern Hemisphere

The Brief

Multiplex engaged Pure Gold Films to produce a video exploring one of the most distinctive elements of the New Sydney Fish Market: its iconic timber roof structure. This particular piece focuses on the design, engineering, and construction of the wave-shaped lattice roof formed from glulam timber beams, one of the defining architectural features of the project.

The objective was to create an informative, visually rich film that could communicate the scale, sustainability, and complexity of the roof structure to a broad audience, from industry professionals through to the general public.

Our Approach

We produced this project spotlight video by interviewing multiple stakeholders from Multiplex and the specialist timber roofing team to unpack both the design intent and the logistical challenge of delivering the structure. The roof comprises 594 sustainable glulam timber beams, forming what has become the largest timber roof in the Southern Hemisphere.

To properly convey scale and context, we secured the required approvals to safely operate drones over restricted Sydney Harbour airspace, capturing aerial perspectives that would not be possible through ground filming alone. These visuals were combined with on-site coverage and interviews to tell the full story of the planning, procurement, transport, and installation process, including the coordination of global and local expertise to deliver the structure.

The Outcome

The video is being used by Multiplex to showcase innovation, collaboration, and technical excellence on the New Sydney Fish Market, while helping communicate the story behind a world-class cultural icon funded by the NSW Government.
